More Medicinal Plants Grow in Ciego de Ávila - Over 6 000 square meters of medicinal plants have already become productive in Ciego de Ávila, which shows the interest of the country in the millenary procedure of curing with green medicine.

The figure surmounts by about 1 000 square meters what was planned for the first semester of the year, as stated by managers of the Agricultural sector.

In each municipality of the province there is at least one hectare of state land devoted to medicinal plants, where they grow wild indigo, oregano, passion fruit, aloe, rosemary marjoram and linden among others.

Peasant cooperatives also grow herbs and bushes bearing healing properties, which practice has also been extended to dozens of courtyards in Ciego de Ávila.

The urban agriculture system is the one in charge of delivering those plants to pharmacies and sale stands. This system also provide the population with honey bee and related products.

Besides being a viable alternative to replace chemical medications, green medicine is becoming a scientific discipline proving its effectiveness all over the world, and passing on from a generation to another.

Ciego de Ávila also has a plantation specialized in the production of aloe, of which plant the province exports some 10 000 tons to Europe. The transparent gel of its fleshy leaves is used as an ointment to treat wounds, skin infections and burns.

Aloe is also used for constipation, stomach ulcers, arthritis, hepatitis, renal calculus, parasites, asthma, cholesterol, men’s genital herpes, psoriasis, lung cancer, and others including its use in cosmetics.
